Beads of Courage
The Program is a resilience-based intervention designed to support and strengthen children and families coping with serious illness. Through the program children tell their story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their unique treatment path.
Upon enrollment each child is given the Beads of Courage bead color guide with a detachable membership card. Their Beads of Courage journey begins when each child is first given a length of string and beads that spell out their first name. Then, colorful beads, each representing a different treatment milestone are given to the child by their professional health care provider to add to their Beads of Courage collection throughout their treatment as determined by the Beads of Courage Bead Guide
Nursing Scholarships
Asher's Heart provides scholarships to local nurses for cardiac-specific training at the National Cardiac Surgery Conference. The American Family Children's Hospital PICU nurse management sends two nurses each year with our scholarship.
NICU Holiday Care Packages
Friends and Family of Asher's Heart support families currently in the NICU, giving them a special care package to help make the holidays just a little bit easier. We know what it's like to be parents in the NICU and strive to support families with practical support. Our goal is not just to help give them something tangible, but also to let them know they're not alone.
Encouragement Cards
We create encouragement cards to send to parents and families. Groups or individuals can join us in our efforts to support families with the power of a handwritten or handmade card.
Infant Scale Program
Infant scales provided to Inter-stage monitoring program. We provide scales that are given out to low income families.
Heart Cough Pillow Program
After open heart surgery, coughing is a critical piece to the healing process but it is very painful. Cough pillows are designed to relieve some of that pain. The children's hospitals in our area did not have this tool for their patients so we sew heart pillows and donate them to American Family Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Since 2019, we have donated approximately 200 pillows.
